4 Critical Display Design Mistakes Made At Trade Shows

Whether you love or hate trade shows, there’s no denying the impact they can have on your business and brand if you are successful at one. Exposing your business to a market of people who are there to seek products and services just like yours, in a face to face environment, make trade shows a rare breed of marketing, one that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Getting your display layout right is crucial to the success you have, and in this post we will be looking at the critical mistakes made when designing displays for trade shows.



One of the most common mistakes made in display design is poor graphics and imagery, in many different situations. From being to close together or being bad quality in general, there are many ways to mess up your graphics on your display. A good way to ensure you are getting the best from your display is making sure they are spread out evenly at eye level, of the highest quality and well lit. 


Implementing technology and interactivity into your display is crucial for engaging and attracting prospects. In the modern day, there is no excuse to not understand the effects social media and technology has had on the world, and it’s certain that your potential customers are using them every single day. If your display doesn’t feature some way to engage prospects you will be almost certainly overlooked and won’t be able to sustain initial interest beyond what they have in front of them. 


Having tables surrounding your display creates a barrier between you and the people you want to talk to, if you need to use surfaces make them an extension of your display rather than something to hide behind. Use of tables should be restricted to the ends of your booths to ensure the set up offers a more welcoming and open impression to your prospects. 


Before you even get to the trade show and set up it is crucial to have theme, a focus and a goal that you want to achieve through your display. Inconsistency will make your display look a mess and can become extremely confusing for your prospects. Having a clear understanding of why you are going to the trade show and what you want to focus on the most, will enable you to channel consistency into your display, and attract more prospects.


A weak layout is a common hinder on the success your business will have at a trade show. It’s really easy to get it wrong if you are not prepared or don’t understand your surroundings at the show. Research your fellow exhibitors, have a good understanding of your presence when it comes to the area you are in and get an idea of where your competitors will be. All of these factors will enable you to make initial, educated plans for your layout, you will then need to focus on HOW to make your area work. Utilising a good creative team and researching successful competitor layouts will help you to gain a general idea of what will work and what won’t.
